Product Review: King Arthur Flour Gluten Free Brownie Mix
64Absolutely incredible...
I follow King Arthur Flour on Facebook, and was THRILLED when I heard about the release of their gluten free flour line. Not only do they have this brownie mix, but they also have mixes for bread, cake, cookies, pizza, pancakes, muffins, and regular gluten free flour to use in your recipes that call for regular flour. Me being a chocoholic, of course I had to try the brownie mix first.
I anxiously awaited the arrival of these at Whole Foods, and when I saw the boxes, it was like a light shining down from heaven! I love me some brownies, and I especially miss Chocolate Thunder from Down Under from Outback Steakhouse. With these brownies, it's back! Homemade, of course...
First things first - preparation for this is as simple as it gets. Just mix butter (or oil), water and eggs in a bowl, add the mix, stir it up, and pour into a greased pan. Easy, easy, easy! Baking instructions are for 30-35 minutes, but I used the lower time due to having an overheating oven. I will admit I tasted the batter - a bad habit I've never quite broken since childhood - and it was WONDERFUL. High hopes after that!
The house smelled soooo good while these were baking. I almost couldn't wait to let these cool off. Hey, when you want a brownie, you WANT a brownie! :o)
Glad I waited, though, because the waiting only improved the crispy edges. Now, I gotta say, these are just like the brownies my grandmother used to make - tender and thick on the inside, with a crackly top, and those delectable crisp edges that we all fought over as kids. These do NOT taste gluten free. I kept having to remind myself it was ok to eat it - that's how good they are.
I made these using canola oil since I am dairy free right now, but I would imagine that butter would taste absolutely delightful. My husband and son, who normally approach gluten free desserts with a bit of trepidation, declared these delicious over and over again. I heard more than one "WOW!".
I was thrilled with this mix. They tasted even better the next day after baking. To make your Chocolate Thunder, just warm up a piece of brownie, top with vanilla ice cream (coconut milk vanilla for me!), whipped cream, hot fudge and enjoy!

I was so excited about these after hearing from others that the KA GF brownies were "to die for." Sadly, after spending $7 on these at Whole Foods, I was not thrilled with the results. While they smell great, look great and don't "taste" gluten free, I found the texture to be off-putting; as did my husband. They were grainy and I am still chewing on grainy after-effects 5 minutes later as I post this. in addition, they did not hold together so they could be removed from
the pan in one piece - they fell apart all over the place. Next time, I will buy the Betty Crocker GF mix which o have has better results with in the past.

Glad you enjoyed the brownies so much! I agree - they're DELICIOUS even for us gluten-eaters. :-)
Happy Baking!
